Scripps National Spelling Bee
How do you spell “America’s most interesting teenager?” ” Zaila Vanguard!!!
Zaila made history on Thursday when she won the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee, becoming the first African-American champion. The 14-year-old also became the first winner for the state of Louisiana.
The teenager won the title after correctly spelling “murraya” – a type of tree – but not before joking that the word contained a comedian’s last name … to the delight of Bill Murray fans everywhere.
On her way to becoming the first Black American to win all 93 editions of the competition, Zaila also had to spell words like “querimonious”, “solidungulate” and “Nepeta”. The only other black winner was from Jamaica Jody-Anne Maxwell in 1998.
There is much more to Avant-garde than its spelling … which it only started doing in competition 2 years ago. She’s also a gifted basketball player who holds 3 Guinness World Records for dribbling skills … and even her last name is special. His father changed him from Heard to Avant-garde in homage to the jazz legend, Jean Coltrane.
With her victory, Zaila took home $ 50,000 and wowed people like First Lady Jill biden who attended the event.
Our sincere thanks to
