Why Everyone’s Hyping About The Exclusive, Invite-Only Clubhouse App
At the end of January, Clubhouse secured an investment of US $ 100 million, valuing the company at US $ 1 billion.
It has since made waves online for its exclusive and elusive nature.
The invitation-only audio app grew from 1,500 users in May 2020 to over 600,000 in December of the same year.
With the app, users can listen to conversations, interviews, and discussions between interesting people on various topics – much like listening to a live podcast.
Just like a phone call, once the conversation is over, the room is closed.
The catch is that the app can’t be joined by just anyone. It works by invitation only, so you must first receive an invitation from an existing user before you can join the “club”.
Relative privacy has prompted celebrities, thought leaders, and entrepreneurs like Elon Musk, Oprah Winfrey, and Jared Leto to make their presence visible on the app, so you can expect to hear them.
How to get an invitation?
To join, an existing Clubhouse user must send an invitation from their app, which allows you to create an account.
If you are invited, you will receive a link that is sent to your phone number, directing you to a registration page in the app.
Without an invitation, users will need to reserve a username instead. This means that they will be added to a waiting list until they receive an invitation from a friend.
When a person joins the Clubhouse, they automatically receive an invitation that they can send to someone using their phone number.
In order to be able to invite more people, they must “welcome rooms and participate”.
Unfortunately, the app is now only available to iPhone users.
However, the creators announced in a blog post that their 2021 goal was to complete the beta phase of the app, and ultimately “open Clubhouse to the world.”
Share conversations between industry professionals and celebrities
Unlike Facebook and Instagram, Clubhouse doesn’t deal with trivial information such as discussing what they ate for lunch.
Instead, it has become the primary space for celebrities, media figures, and industry professionals to share stories and advice.
Once you’re in the app, you’ll see rooms of people having conversations. You might come across celebrities, musicians, entrepreneurs and commentators sharing information and knowledge.
In fact, the app likely gained popularity when Tesla founder Elon Musk hosted an in-app audio chat with Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev.
This helped propel Clubhouse to the top of the startup rankings and sparked a rush for invites.
While large-scale events like the appearance of Elon Musk are plentiful, there are also niche interest groups ranging from bitcoin and meditation to a Mandarin Learners’ Club.
It’s also easy to set up private audio rooms for certain friends, meetings, or one-on-one chats.
The experience is similar to the online conference, where the moderators have the microphone, the audience can raise their hands to ask a question, and the moderators have the option of bringing the audience to “stage” to speak.
Audio rooms are where all of the activity takes place – imagine being at a large convention and peering into the booths for ongoing conversations.
The clubhouse rooms presented in the hallway are public and anyone can access them at any time to listen to conversations on the topic of their choice.
But is it really worth the hype? It all depends on your motivation to use the app.

It is not without controversies
The clubhouse was stranded in China on February 8 following several uncensored conversations about sensitive issues on the platform.
According to the Financial Times, thousands of Chinese have flocked to the app to debate controversial issues, such as the Uyghurs in Xinjiang and the question of Taiwan’s sovereignty.
On top of that, Clubhouse has also addressed issues like bullying and harassment, as real-time conversations are harder to moderate.
However, according to the founders of the app, their ultimate goal is to “create a more human social experience.”
It remains to be seen how the team will be able to manage the conversations while keeping them authentic.
For now, Clubhouses’ exclusivity and success in wooing celebrities and thought leaders will ensure the app’s longevity and more viral moments.
