A Pekingese named Wasabi made his way to the Best in Show at the Westminster Dog Show 2021 … following in the footsteps of his doggon brother !!!
It’s a pretty incredible feat, but the owner and trainer of Wasabi, David Fitzpatrick, already has a Best in Show winner … his other Pekingese, Malachy, won the event in 2012.
But, Sunday’s event was all about Wasabi, 3, who displayed a “proper Pekingese gait” that resembles “a goldfish moving through water” … according to the advertisers.
Wasabi beat 6 other group winners to take first prize, with Bourbon the whippet coming in second.
There was also another very famous dog owner involved in the competition at the second oldest continuous sporting event in the United States (behind the Kentucky Derby) … Barry Bonds!!!
Rocky, the all-time MLB leader’s miniature schnauzer, was in the mix, and while the good boy didn’t win… Barry was a proud dog dad for sure.
Another historical note – this year’s event took place at Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown, New York, not Madison Square Garden… where it has been held every year since 1877. This decision is the result of the pandemic.
Fitzpatrick says that to celebrate this historic victory, he drank champagne… and Wasabi had a filet mignon.
