The first rap music song to hit number 1 on Billboard – Vanilla ice cream“Ice Ice Baby” by – is still one of the most controversial, as one of Ice’s collaborators comes forward claiming the rapper is a total fraud.
Mario “Chocolate” Johnson – the man Suge Knight infamously named co-writer of the eventual hit track – unfolded in a new interview with ‘The Art Of Dialogue’, exposing what he says is Ice’s true contribution to his debut album… ZERO !!!
Mario ripped into Ice, aka Rob Van Winkle, saying…”He said he wrote ‘Ice Ice Baby’ when he was 16…he didn’t write ANY part of that song!”
Vanilla Ice has challenged Johnson’s work in the past…perhaps most passionately in her ABC interview in the ’90s when the incident was still fresh in her mind.
Urban legend has it that Suge and his sidekick physically armed Ice by hanging him from a hotel balcony and making him drink urine in order to coerce him into signing part of the writing credits – which funded the launch of Death Row Records.
One thing that all parties (including Suge) agree on is that the whole mafia style of Vanilla Ice hanging over a balcony has been extensively embellished.
Although Ice admits he went out on the balcony to be bullied, that’s where the physical contact stops. Mario also confirms this and adds that the heated reunion was NOT about “Ice Ice Baby” at all – but, instead, says it was about the other 8 songs from Ice’s album, “To the Extreme”.
Along with the single being one of the greatest songs of all time, the album has sold over 15 million units worldwide…and Mario says that’s what he and Suge were really after that day.
