UPDATE
10:52 a.m. PT — Tyga decided to delete the clip, reiterating that he meant no harm.
Tyga‘s ticked off many fans, especially in the Latin community, with his new “Ay Caramba” video, which is filled with unsavory stereotypes…and now he’s apologizing in a new interview.
Los Angeles radio station Power 106 hosted an interview with Tyga and American Cholo …a podcaster specializing in unraveling various stereotypes and misconceptions in the Latino community.
Tyga’s video has plenty of it – for example, a game show host wearing a sombrero and a couch potato with no shortage of tortilla chips.
AC says stereotypes were the main cause for concern, simply pointing out how reversing “chips and low-rider” imagery with “fried chicken and watermelon” would be easy red flags for African Americans.
Tyga says he was confused by the original backlash, as he and YG had a huge hit with “Go Loko” a few years ago – it went double platinum and amassed over 200 million views on YouTube.
T-Raww apologized during his chat with American Cholo – but the interview ended in a stalemate. When Tyga was asked if he would take down the video, he hesitated because he said he paid $250,000 of his own money to make the video…but says he’ll think about it.
So far it’s been viewed 4 million times in just under a month…and that’s probably because of a lot of shocking and awesome shares. “Ay Caramba” indeed.
