Trump Says He Will Pardon Susan B. Anthony for Voting in 1872
President Trump revealed who he’ll forgive this week – and no, it’s not Exotic joe … strangely, it is Susan B. Anthony.
DT made the announcement Tuesday after insisting the day before that he was going to forgive someone of age, saying Anthony should not have been convicted of voting in the 1872 presidential election. .. which was illegal for women. at the time.
It’s a strange choice and comes across as a desperate appeal to women ahead of the November election. The point is, there are a lot of people still alive who could have used forgiveness now.
Yet, since we’re on the subject of SBA – here is the story of his conviction … which was released in sketchy circumstances and probably doesn’t need official rectification all these years later.
Susan broke election law to protest that year when Ulysses S. Grant faced Horace Greeley. As we said, only men were allowed to vote at that time – but the women’s suffrage movement was in full swing … and Susan was leading the charge. She and a dozen other women gained access to the kiosks.
She was one of many arrested and tried for voting – but the judge presiding over her case actually ordered the jury to return a guilty verdict, which it did. All she had to do was pay a $ 100 fine, but she resisted … on the basis that she had done nothing wrong.
Funny enough, the Supreme Court later ruled that it was wrong for a federal judge to direct a verdict out of a jury – but Anthony’s conviction was still on the books … until now it was. is.
Our sincere thanks to
