This S’pore label makes men’s shirts that outlast the ‘tropicks’

Anyone who has lived in Singapore would understand how hot and humid the climate is – you only have to walk along the street to leave unsightly sweat stains on them.

When Monica Millington moved from Texas to Singapore to be with her husband in 2017, she realized that there was no type of clothing available that could meet the perpetually tropical climate and still seem appropriate in settings. job.

To add to the problem, men tend to have fewer options than women when shopping, and Monica couldn’t find suitable solutions for her husband.

She then decided to create clothes that could survive the tropics for all men, which led to the birth of Tropick.

Tropick is a premium men’s clothing brand that creates everyday men’s essentials designed to withstand the tropical climate. He started off with a line of performance dress shirts that marry high-end athletic wear with the timeless style of the classic white shirt.

Monica wanted to make Tropick shirts the most comfortable dress shirts in the world, giving them features that typical shirts can’t boast of.

On the one hand, shirts are sweat-wicking, meaning they dry quickly when the wearer encounters sweaty situations. By the nature of the fabric, they are also wrinkle resistant and easy to care for, making them more practical and an easy care option to wear every day of the week.

The hems are also shaped so that they can be tucked in or out, allowing the shirts to be worn in formal or more casual settings. In addition, the cuffs are adjustable to accommodate different wrist sizes and are convertible between buttons and cufflinks.

Every detail has been thought of because this shirt is our bread and butter. Really, it’s the shirt that does it all. Aside from some sportswear brands, there is hardly any other brand that creates this type of men’s clothing in South East Asia today.

Monica started prototyping for Tropick in May 2019 and the brand was finally launched in August 2020 due to some delays in the supply chain due to Covid-19.

The brand was launched with the No Sweat Shirt, which retails on Tropick’s online store for S $ 198. A few other products have since launched, with loungewear sets coming out in a few weeks.

Focus on sustainability

In addition to providing high quality clothing, Tropick also places emphasis on sustainability.

Customers will receive their Tropick shirt in a reusable mesh laundry bag, which can reduce micro-waste by up to 80% per wash. It also helps extend the life of the garment, so wearers can get even more use out of it.

Additionally, the shirt ships in a biodegradable mailbag, and all paper used in Tropick’s packaging and labels is uncoated and fully recyclable.

I started by traveling the world looking for the best of the best materials and construction techniques and then built my prices around this model so that I wouldn’t sacrifice quality with an arbitrary budget. I interviewed a sample group to find out what their issues were with a traditional shirt so that I could fix them with my shirt. It helped me design everything from the cuffs to the collar to the button placket, hem and buttons.

Once I finally had the perfect prototype, I had to work pretty hard to find a production house that had safety and ethics certifications, could produce clothes in an environmentally friendly way, and build a traditional garment with quality. new innovative fabrics and techniques.

Monica also said all of her clothing is made in factories that pass a personal audit by their team, to ensure wages are fair and safe, and clean working conditions are met for workers.

All the attention to every detail of the brand and the product was the reason why Monica took over a year to develop the No Sweat Shirt.

Become a lifestyle brand

Due to its unique selling point, Tropick was selected as one of 11 brands to participate in The Bridge Fashion Incubator program set up last year by the Textile and Fashion Federation of Singapore.

Most recently, Monica was selected to be one of 16 contestants to participate in the hit TV series The Apprentice: ONE Championship Edition, which is currently airing.

For now, Tropick is fully self-funded as Monica aims to grow the business as organically as possible in its first year, with the team feeling the local market and determining their opportunities for expansion.

She currently has her eyes on Australia, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Japan.

She also envisions Tropick moving from a core brand to a full lifestyle line with physical stores, so customers can experience the feel of Tropick shirts in person.

“Any plan for growth will be rooted in our core value, which is that all of our offerings should be comfortable, designed for the tropics, and genuinely useful and versatile,” she said.
