‘Straight Outta Compton’ Star Jason Mitchell to Portray Sean Bell in Biopic
Jason mitchellThe latter’s next big role is incredibly timely – it depicts the life of a black man gunned down by cops just hours before his wedding … one of the most controversial police shootings in recent history.
Jason, who once played Eazy-E in “Straight Outta Compton”, landed the role of Sean Bell in the aptly titled movie “50 Shots” … a reference to the 50 bullets the cops fired in 2006, killing Sean in Jamaica, Queens.
Bell was only 23 years old and had just finished celebrating his bachelor party with his father and his 2 friends when the cops opened fire on their car. Plainclothes cops investigating a nearby strip club thought the men were armed – but they weren’t.
Four years later … the city moved in with the Bell family for $ 7 million, but 3 of the cops who opened fire were fully acquitted. It’s a hell of a story … a story Jason couldn’t pass up when he read the script.
Jason, an executive producer with Tru from TruVision Films, originally read for the role of one of the undercover cops. But, while reading the script, he immediately asked to play the part of Sean because he wanted to help tell his story. Tru totally agreed.
The film, which has been in the works for 3 years now and will be set in Queens, is one of many projects that focus on the tragic incident … but Sean’s family thinks this one is special because they were so involved – especially Sean’s dad, William. We’re told he’s talked to Jason almost every day since taking the role.
