S’pore To Have 1,000 Smart Lockers Under Pick Network By End-2021
Pick Network, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Infocomm Media Development Authority, will deploy its first batch of up to 200 smart lockers by April this year.
These should be placed in several areas including West Coast, Toa Payoh, Pasir Ris, and Tampines.
This rollout follows a successful trial that began in December 2018. Since last year, Pick Network has been collecting online feedback from residents by placing mock-up lockers with QR codes in HDB domains.
By the end of 2021, the government plans to deploy a nationwide network of 1,000 lockers by the end of 2021, a year ahead of the original end-2022 target.
All lockers will be deployed within a five minute walk of the HDB blocks.
The deployment dates were announced by Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information Sim Ann during the budget debate at the Department for Communications and Information yesterday (March 2).
How it works
Pick Network will be integrated as a delivery option on mainstream e-commerce platforms such as Lazada, Shopee, and Qoo10.
While checking out on the different platforms, online shoppers can select Locker Collection as their preferred delivery option and choose the Pick Locker location closest to its extensive network.
Once the package has arrived in the locker, the customer will then receive an SMS to inform them that they are ready for collection. To collect the package, the customer will have to unlock the locker using a unique PIN code.
According to Sim Ann, 96% of residents surveyed said the lockers would bring them more convenience and they would use their neighborhood lockers.
It is also part of the efforts to ensure environmental sustainability in the logistics sector amid the rise of e-commerce.
“The parcel locker network is expected to reduce the distance traveled for delivery by 44% per day, which will go a long way in reducing carbon emissions,” said Sim Ann.
