S’pore Gov’t Launches New Jobs Portal For Jobseekers

COVID-19 has had a negative impact on the labor market in Singapore. Many companies have laid off their workers or imposed a hiring freeze.

Singapore’s unemployment rate fell to 3.6 percent in September, according to the Ministry of Manpower. This brings the total number of unemployed residents to 112,500, of which 97,700 are Singaporeans.

For those who are struggling to find a job, the Singapore government has just launched a new job portal (www.jobsgohere.gov.sg).

It is aimed at all job seekers – from recent graduates looking to enter the workforce for the first time, to those looking to change careers.

Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said in a Facebook post yesterday (November 1) that “it connects you to both jobs and training opportunities”, especially in growing industries.

He added that job seekers who do not have the necessary industry-specific skills and experience can still apply and work on their development.

No job match will be perfect. Employers need to take responsibility: be prepared to offer opportunities to job seekers even if they come without all the required background or qualifications, see how their past experience can be used, help them hone their skills and use the generous government support programs. .

Job seekers must be prepared to enter new territory and develop further on the job. Many did and found satisfaction in their new careers.

Employment will be a “central challenge” of the future

Mr Tharman noted that employment will be the “central challenge” of the future as many countries are likely to face high and prolonged unemployment.

According to him, the COVID-19 pandemic is “far from tamed” and we cannot expect vaccines to be a “quick fix”.

He predicts a “slow and bumpy” global economic recovery and possible repeated lockdowns like what we are currently seeing in various countries. This will affect Singapore, he added.

However, the good news is that Singapore’s community cases have remained weak and he believes Singapore will be successful “if we all play our part.”

We need to apply that same focus to jobs, and with more force than ever. We put all our energy into it. The government and our tripartite partners are working hard to help displaced Singaporeans find new jobs.

We also want to avoid, as much as possible, unsuitable jobs that could lead to a significant and permanent reduction in wages and the loss of skills already acquired.

He further describes the job landscape as a “dumbbell structure”.

Jobs have been created mostly at the high and low skilled ends of the labor market, with fewer jobs in the middle.

With the onset of COVID-19, the lower end of that bar is shrinking, he noted.

“A whole range of service tasks are being phased out by e-commerce, remote working, safe distancing and other new social guidelines and rules that we might have to live with for a few years,” said Mr. Tharman.

This problem is already occurring in several other advanced countries, and the government is working hard to prevent this from happening in Singapore as well.

“We need to be a place where everyone can adapt to new realities, get support to keep learning, see things improve over time, and get the most out of life. I am convinced that we will be successful.
