SingPost To Trial Smart Letterboxes In West SG
SingPost announced today (September 14) that it will be doing its first test of its smart mailboxes with a western neighborhood.
According to Vincent Phang, CEO of SingPost and Head of Postal Services, the current letterbox “nests” could be replaced over time.
The smart mailbox system has been in development since 2019 – a prototype was launched in September at the Asia Home Retail Logistics Conference and Exhibition.
Unlike the current SingPost system, which only delivers packages, the smart mailbox delivers both packages and mail through a centralized machine.
When demonstrating the prototype, SingPost packages are dropped off and collected in individual lockers after providing some form of identification, which includes a smartphone app, QR code, or facial ID.
Like packages, SingPost mail can be collected after some form of authentication is provided through an ATM that drops the requested mail into the collection box.
Singapore Postal Service updates are needed to save time and manpower. Door-to-door deliveries take six minutes, while deliveries take just six seconds for letterbox delivery.
In last year’s demo, a smart stamp was also introduced that would track all mail and parcels at every step.
Smart buffers will be integrated with data matrix codes containing information about the sender and recipient.
Users can also be notified of their deliveries on a mobile app once they have arrived.
Innovation in Singapore’s postal infrastructure comes at a time of accelerating e-commerce as more people choose to shop online during a global pandemic.
According to Global Data, Singapore’s e-commerce market is expected to reach S $ 9.5 billion in 2020 and has grown at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.4% over the past five years.
With the rise of e-commerce, smarter innovations like this are definitely the right step forward.
