Shell & Porsche launch their first cross-border EV charging station in Johor

In March 2021, Shell and Porsche Asia Pacific (Porsche) announced their intention to launch a cross-border high performance charging (HPC) network for electric vehicles (EVs). Called Shell Recharge HPC, it would be the first in Southeast Asia.

Once implemented, it would offer electric vehicle owners the ability to travel from Singapore to Thailand via Peninsular Malaysia without worrying about range anxiety.

Did you know: Range anxiety is an EV owner’s fear that their battery will not be charged enough for the vehicle to reach its final destination or that a charging station will not be available for charging “on the road”. .


This HPC network will be made up of 12 charging points spread over 6 Shell stations located along the North-South highway in Malaysia.

The first charging station has now been launched at Shell Station in Tangkak Lay-By (South Bound), Johor. The next step in securing a charging point will likely be the Pagoh (South Bound) Rest Area, located in Muar, Johor.

After Johor, the other Malaysian states that will host the HPC network are Negeri Sembilan and Perak.

According to reports, all of these charging stations are expected to be fully operational by the second half of 2022.

For convenient charging of electric vehicles along highways

The stations are equipped with 180kW direct current (DC) chargers that Shell says can charge an EV from 0% to 80% in 30 minutes, depending on the model and capacity of an EV.

If there is only one car charging, it could benefit from the full tariff of 180kW, if there are 2 cars, both benefit from tariff of 90kW.

3 payment levels are available for EV owners to choose from:

  • Standard rate (pay as you go, no subscription) – RM20 / 5 min.
  • Gold Member (1 year subscription) – RM12 / 5 minutes for the first 25 minutes, and RM5 / 5 minutes thereafter. (Applicable for the first 10 hours per year.)
  • Platinum Member (3-year subscription, free with the purchase of a Porsche Taycan) – RM10 / 5 minutes the first 25 minutes and RM5 / 5 minutes thereafter. (Applicable for the first 12 hours per year.)

Each level comes with an RM4 confirmation fee and offers varying discounts and additional perks, with more details available here.

Reservations and payments will be made through the ParkEasy app. As soon as a reservation is confirmed, the parking space with charging station will be reserved for you up to one hour before your arrival.

Still, feelings of Malaysian electric vehicle owners seem lukewarm

As I took a look at a local FB group for EV enthusiasts and owners, MyEVOC, I was surprised to see that their overall reaction to this news tipped more towards the “meh” side.

(To be clear, this group doesn’t represent the overall Malaysian EV owner population, but it does give us some insight into what the community thinks about this HPC network.)

As to why? Well, there seem to be a couple of reasons. The most common that I have seen was that the prices quoted by Shell are considered high.

Particularly because it charges owners in 5 minute intervals (i.e. the time it takes to charge your EV) instead of per kW, the latter which some owners prefer.

The basis of this argument is also how each EV has its own charging curve. For those unfamiliar with the lingo, a charge curve basically refers to how the charge rate of an EV changes over a period of time.

As an EV fills up, it charges more slowly. For an electric vehicle with a battery just over 10%, it can power up quickly and use all the 180 kW offered by Shell.

But once it hits the range of 50% or more, that rate may slow down, meaning it will no longer benefit from the 180 kW rate. All of these percentages depend on your EV model.

At that point, a homeowner is simply paying too much for less kW to continue charging their EV, as they are billed based on the time they spend plugged in.

Moreover, it assumes that the EV model in question is capable of consuming even 180 kW of charge in the first place, as some older models limit their charging consumption to a much lower kW.

When we last asked a few EV owners about their own journeys to switch from gasoline, they shared that charging stations (or the lack of them) weren’t a big deal.

However, not all homeowners come with their own portable chargers (which require a 3-prong wall outlet to operate). In a pinch, Shell’s HPC network would still be able to refuel on the go.
