The pivot
Shaquille O’Neal talks about his divorce with Shaunie O’Nealnot only taking the blame for the split, but also acknowledging the loneliness that followed when his then-estranged wife and children left their family home.
The 50-year-old Hall of Famer joined “The Pivotal Podcast“ with ryan clark, Channing Crowder and Fred Taylor this week… and realized that his relationship had broken down.
“I had the perfect situation,” Shaq clearly told the guys.
“My wife was prettier than a cup. I kept giving babies to myself, still prettier than a cup – I had everything.”
The hoop legend and Shaunie wed in 2002 – amid Shaq’s dominating NBA reign – and had four children together… shareef, Amira, Chaqir and Me’arah.
Sadly, the two separated in 2007…before reconciling almost immediately. However, although they got back together for a while, Shaunie filed for divorce in 2009, citing “irreconcilable differences”.
The divorce was finalized in 2011.
And, Shaq isn’t trying to shift the blame elsewhere… he’s clearly saying he was at fault.
“I’m not looking for excuses. I know I messed up.”
Shaquille last played in the NBA in the 2010-11 season…so he had a lot of free time, and he admits he felt lonely.
“I was lost. 76,000 square foot house all by myself. Lost.”
O’Neal announces his divorce from the ‘Basketball Wives’ star and executive producer – who is currently engaged to his fiancée Keion Henderson — is one of three major regrets that continue to haunt his mind.
The other two… the strained relationship he had with Kobe Bryant and Penny Hardaway.
The pivot
“Big mistake in the Penny relationship. Big mistake in the Kobe relationship,” Shaq said.
“I was arrogant, I was stupid, but sometimes when you do a lot of things you don’t want to work on them. Those are the only three big regrets I have.”
