The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus isn’t backing down from a controversial song in the wake of what they claim is a wave of death threats to come.
Here’s the deal… the SFGMC recently posted a song on social media where they satirically sing, “We’re going to convert your kids,” but they say it’s taken out of context and they’re getting a lot of hateful reactions. , including violent threats.
The Chorus puts the blame on “conservative far-right media” … claiming that the song’s ironic humor is lost on people and used instead to “support a narrative that suits their intolerant and hateful needs”.
Their intention with the “convert” line is a double meaning – when you hear the full song they sing, they will convert the “not to hate” kids.
The SFGMC says death threats come in emails and comments on social media, and the group says he will not be threatened and will not recoil in the face of violence. The Choir says it is working with national and local law enforcement to deal with the suspected threats.
The Chorus sticks to the song, but they say they’re making the video private so that it isn’t easily copied and taken out of context on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and other websites.
