Roy Jones Jr.dual American/Russian citizen, says TMZ Sports he works behind the scenes to free Britney Grinereven saying he’s ready to fly to Moscow to escort the WNBA star home.
“Would I put my life on the line, would I try to go to Russia to swap prisoners? Yes, I would,” the Hall of Fame boxer said, before explaining why. “Because if [Brittney] was my daughter, I wish someone would do the same for me.”
Of course, Griner was Locked in a Russian prison for around 4 months, and could ultimately face a decade or more in jail…all because authorities at an airport near Moscow claim the star hooper attempted to smuggle drugs (hash oil) in the country.
Enter the legendary fighter… who although born in Florida, also became a Russian citizen in 2015, with the help of Vladimir Poutine.
Roy thinks the friends he’s made in Russia over the years might be able to help Griner.
“I had a friend, a couple of my friends that I knew, I called and said, ‘Is it possible to try to facilitate?’ because I don’t do politics. I’m a sports personality and they love me as a sports personality. “Is there a way I can use my sports influence to possibly organize something to help bring Brittney back at home?”
And, Roy says there’s a way to bring Brittney home… via a “prisoner swap.”
“My friend called me and he called me back and he said, ‘Yeah, they said they would be willing to do a prisoner swap.’ I said, ‘Well, that’s probably hard because the prisoner exchange is probably a real prisoner.’ It’s not necessarily a person who is a real prisoner, but I’m sure maybe the United States will understand that and bring them home because I would be terrified if my child was stuck in a foreign country in prison , you know ?”
As for the identity of Roy’s friend… he says one of his buddies is very close to Putin.
“One of my guys is like — he’s Mr. Putin’s right-hand man in office, so he knows about the political scheme. He’s a journalist and he usually does most of the reporting for Mr. Putin. so that he can get in touch directly with whoever is needed to help me.”
For your information, much of the news media in Russia is state-owned.
How she gets home… Brittney’s family doesn’t care. They just want their beloved back, as soon as possible. If Roy can help…safe to assume his help is more than welcome.
