Rick Ross and his family are under fire in Mississippi for allegedly taking money from the salaries of their Wingstop employees – and now they’ve been hit with fines.
The US Department of Labor said it hit Boss Wings Enterprises LLC – Rick Ross’s company – with a fine of $114,427 for back wages and other penalties after the agency determined their franchises violated the laws of the work.
It’s unclear what time period this covers exactly, but the DOL says that after an investigation of 5 sites – all owned and operated by Boss Wings – they found that many employees were earning less than $7.25/hour after factoring in all deductions – a big no-no under minimum wage laws on the books.
The reason… DOL alleges that the owners of these specific franchises were forcing workers to pay for uniforms, basic safety training, background checks and cash register shortages.
The department also claims that the owners of these 5 restaurants were, in many cases, working their employees to the bone… making them work overtime without paying them properly and without keeping proper time records available. hand.
Not only that, but DOL claims to have found a case where a 15-year-old employee worked past 10 p.m. multiple times in June 2021 – which the agency says violated a law prohibiting such young workers from working after 7 p.m. .
In total, the DOL hit Boss Wings with $51,674 in back wages/damages for 244 workers – and additional fines of nearly $63,000.
A labor official said, “Employees in the restaurant industry work hard, often for low wages, and many depend on every dollar earned to make ends meet. The law prevents Boss Wing Enterprises LLC from shifting costs exploitation to workers by deducting the costs of uniforms, saving money for shortages or training expenses, or allowing a worker’s wage to fall below the minimum wage rate.”
Rick has been building his Wingstop empire for years and recently even gifted his teenage daughter with her own franchise. His sister, Tawanda, is listed as the registered agent of Boss Wings. We’ve reached out to her and Rick for a comment… so far, no word back.
