The remaining section of the collapsed condominium building in Florida has been demolished … it went exactly as planned and may in fact help with the rescue / recovery effort.
Explosives went off in the middle of the night on Sunday … knocking down the rest of the tower structure. Authorities took action to anticipate an impending tropical storm, which could have knocked the structure to the ground … seriously hampering the search.
Mayor of Surfside Charles Burkett warned that extreme winds could have destabilized what remained of the South Champlain Tower, endangering search teams.
Residents of neighboring buildings were urged to stay indoors and close all windows to keep debris and dust out.
The demolition could actually help with search efforts … rescuers can now access the underground garage, which was not previously accessible.
So far 24 bodies have been found … 121 people are still missing, but it has been 11 days since the collapse and after the first few hours no one has been taken out alive.
Research teams resume their work on Monday
It is still unclear what caused the structure to collapse, but it increasingly appears that a breach in the pool area may have sparked the disaster. A 2018 building inspection revealed major flaws in the design.
