R. KellyThe top 2 lawyers are getting off the ship… they officially want to step down from the case as his federal trial draws near, and that means he may have some serious legal shuffles to make… TMZ has learned.
Lawyers Steven greenberg and Michel leonard – who has been with Kelly for years – filed documents late Monday asking to step aside from the singer’s federal affair. Their reason for wanting to step down is a clash with other members of Kelly’s legal team.
Greenberg and Leonard tell TMZ … “We have refused to adjudicate a case with lawyers who do not have the appropriate level of experience and skill because it is not in the best interest of the client’s own ego or personal interest and act or act in the best interest of the client. ”
Kelly’s remaining avocados that the elders clearly have beef with are Thomas A. Farinella and Nicole blank becker … and they have a different take on how it happened. They tell us, “The only comment we have at the moment is that Mr. Kelly fired the two lawyers before they filed their application.”
Now the judge would have to sign before Greenberg and Leonard can be fired, and that hasn’t happened yet …
Either way, this power struggle within her legal team comes at a crucial time for Kelly. His federal trial – which includes charges of racketeering, sexual exploitation of a child, kidnapping, forced labor and bribery – is due to start on August 9.
Greenberg and Leonard tell us they want to get out because they feel Farinella and Becker don’t have enough experience in federal criminal matters – but they add, “We only wish Mr. Kelly the greatest. success.”
Kelly has remained in custody pending trial, and although he has filed multiple requests to be released on bail – citing things like fear of catching COVID – the judge has repeatedly rejected him
He also faces separate charges of sexual abuse in the state of Illinois, Leonard is not in this case, but Greenberg is, and we are told he is considering withdrawing from this case. also.
