Following the mass killings of Uvalde and Buffalo, President Biden says it’s up to the American people to force Congress to ban assault weapons, and the best way to do that is to vote in the voting booth.
The Prez flew to Los Angeles on Wednesday and appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” where he addressed the issue of gun violence in the United States. Remember, jimmy delivered a passionate monologue after the elementary school massacre… then he asked Biden bluntly, “Why didn’t we do anything about it?”
POTUS said he sat for 4 hours with the families of the victims in Texas, and talked about the pain on their faces. “
The president didn’t disagree, but then implored all Americans to make gun violence and a ban on assault weapons a “vote matter”…meaning, vote only for the candidates who support your point of view on the issue.
Kimmel questioned why he wouldn’t just ban assault weapons by executive order, and Biden said he didn’t want to abuse the Constitution…like he says his predecessor did. Instead, he says Americans have the power to demand change when they vote.
Of course, the flip side is that we heard the same battle cry after Columbine, Sandy Hook, Parkland and all the other school shootings.
For what it’s worth, the House of Representatives voted on Thursday and passed the “Protecting Our Children Act”…a package of 8 gun control bills. However, it passed mostly on party lines with all Democrats and only 5 Republicans voting in favour, and the reality is that the 50-50 Senate is unlikely to pass it.
If the polls that say the majority of Americans support banning assault weapons are correct, then maybe Biden is right… and it’s time for the Election Day vote to reflect that.
