Portland Protesters Topple Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt Statutes as Racist
Protesters in Portland marked the day before Columbus Day by toppling 2 statues of US presidents, claiming they represent America’s racist history.
The statues were on the route of a march called Indigenous People’s Rage Day. Some of the signs read: “Stop honoring the racist murderers of the colonizers.” A Lewis and Clark mural was also vandalized with red paint.
The overturned statues were spray painted and left unceremoniously on the ground. The words “stolen land” were painted at the base of Lincolnthe statue of.
Police tweeted shortly after the statues were shot: “To those walking downtown: this has been declared a RIOT.” They continued, “All people must disperse immediately into the NORTH. Failure to comply with this order may expose you to arrest, summons or crowd control officers, including, but not limited to tear gas and impact weapons. ”
As far as we can tell, no arrests have been made for removing the statues.
