Pet Adoption Campaign In Malaysia By Royal Canin & PetFinder.my
Author’s Blurb: I am a supporter of the “Adopt, Don’t Shop” movement. At home we have 2 healthy dogs, both of whom we adopted from the streets a few years ago. The rest of their siblings were sent to shelters for adoption as we could only afford to take care of 2 at a time. Since then we have also welcomed more puppies temporarily before finding them forever at home.
In an effort to further encourage this benevolent behavior in Malaysia, pet nutrition brand Royal Canin has partnered with local animal welfare platform PetFinder.my to launch a campaign called ‘Adopt to Save a Life’ .
There is a lot of learning process involved in caring for a pet properly, and it can seem overwhelming to new owners.
Understanding this, the campaign is here to support first-time adopters on their initial journey, as well as to reduce the bullying factor associated with adopting a pet.
“We want to help the new adopter / pet owner prepare not only physically but also mentally when welcoming a new pet home,” Director Dr Melissa Phoon told Vulcan Post. of the general affairs of Royal Canin Malaysia.
Therefore, they distribute 150 starter packs per month to adopters which contain a high quality stainless steel feeding bowl, a measuring cup and a guide on how to welcome and care for their new pets. .
“An eBook on Responsible Animal Ownership can be accessed by scanning the QR code on the starter pack packaging. Information such as our collective responsibility towards animals, the five freedoms of animal welfare, things to ask before welcoming an animal, the living environments (the house) of an animal, the dangers to watch for Animal safety and many more can be found in this guide, ”added Dr. Melissa.
This is how it works
Go to PetFinder.my to get started. Go through the ads and adopt a pet from a trained lifeguard or shelter. The animal’s profile will indicate the availability of the starter pack.
Once you have chosen to adopt a pet, the rescuer will mark it as adopted and register your name and email address in the pet’s profile. PetFinder.my will email you your redemption instructions.
Fill out the online redemption form and Royal Canin Malaysia will email you a 30% Shopee discount voucher. You will first need to make a minimum purchase of RM 30 in the Royal Canin Shopee store.
You can then email or WhatsApp Royal Canin (after getting their details) with the Shopee purchase receipt, and they will deliver the free starter pack to your address.
Each month, 150 units of these starter packs are distributed. There are 2 types:
- Starter Pack A: Comes with free Royal Canin pet food,
- Starter Pack B: delivered without Royal Canin pet food.
The first 100 adopters in a month who make the minimum purchase using the given coupon code (up to RM 50) will receive Starter Pack A. 101st to 105th adopters will receive Starter Pack B.
In total, Royal Canin is distributing 1,800 starter packs throughout the duration of the campaign, which lasts until May 2021.
Since the campaign was announced in November 2020, 139 pets (83 cats and 53 dogs) have found new homes there.
Take responsibility until the end
In my experience of rehousing pets, I have always been difficult with adopters. I have heard sad stories of animals adopted as “gifts” for people who later decide they don’t want to take care of them, abandoning them or sending them back to the rescuer / shelter.
Steps are being taken to prevent this from happening with the campaign, as rescuers or shelters will perform screening or background checks on the adopter.
“Each rescuer / shelter will usually have their own set of guidelines and preferences, often based on the condition and characteristics of the particular animal,” assured Dr Melissa.
“In addition, PetFinder.my also shares guidelines and best practices on assessing adopters through the WAGazine educational portal, providing a foundation on identifying suitable families for pets.”
But that care doesn’t end right after adoption, as the team behind the campaign has learned that success in reducing pet homelessness with responsible pet owners depends on involving everyone. parts.
“PetFinder.my provides the platform to make it easy for shelters and rescuers to reach more potential adopters, while working closely with Royal Canin Malaysia to educate shelters, rescuers and pet owners on Dos and Don’ts on this trip, ”she explained in more detail.
“Periodic follow-ups are then usually done by the many shelters and rescuers who are educated and experienced with adopters, and may offer a trial period to see if the animal gets along with the adopter.”
Some of these shelters and rescuers will also charge a refundable sterilization deposit for young pets so that when the animal is of the appropriate age, the adopter must bring it for spaying / neutering, or request assistance. of the lifeguard to do it. Older animals on the platform will usually already be sterilized before being put up for adoption.
Conclusion: I am happy to see the initiatives taken by the parties involved to ensure that every adoption is done in a responsible manner and that they have ways to ensure that the adopters really take care of their pets.
