Paragliding Kevin Philippe is lucky to be alive after his glider’s lines became badly tangled as he crashed to the ground – before literally opening his rescue parachute about a second before impact!
And the whole death-defying ordeal was filmed.
Philipp shared the terrifying clip on Monday… showing him paragliding thousands of feet in the air when suddenly his lines get tangled. Badly tangled.
KP – who is an aerobatic paraglider (think crazy stunts under a big glider) – desperately tried to straighten the lines, but the attempt was futile.
It appears that Philipp attempted to deploy his reserve parachute, but that also failed to open.
Then, about a second before potential impact, Kevin ripped open the bag containing the escape chute, which then opened…in all likelihood, saving his life and, at the very least, preventing serious injury .
“Oh my God!” Philipp screams after landing (hard) in a small tree.
Philipp posted the video on YouTube, explaining that “strong turbulence” caused the lines to become tangled.
As for how close he was to disaster, Kevin wrote… “The sink speed increased a lot due to the twisting of the wing. The very last chance was to manually open the rescue package .Estimated time remaining was about 1 second This was not the day to die!”
Despite the close call, Philipp says incidents like this are rare.
“This occasion is quite unlucky and rare. Just to keep in mind. Fly high, land safely 😉”
