R.KellyThe 2008 child pornography case was front and center during opening statements in his new criminal trial in Chicago … something his attorney claims was a witch hunt.
Prosecutors kicked things off in front of a jury on Wednesday, saying… “The defendant, Robert Kelly, had sex with multiple children. Kelly’s associates, who they say knew about it while it was happening and helped keep things quiet.
The woman at the center of the 2008 case – who was allegedly filmed having sex with Kelly, when she was 14 – was also mentioned. She was referred to by prosecutors as “Jane”…and they say she’s going to testify in this case about what happened with RK.
The alleged victim of 2008 R. Kelly ready to testify in a new trial
Prosecutors say Kelly went to incredible lengths to buy the silence of Jane and her family at the time … allegedly shipped them out of the country at her expense and had her employees move mountains to conceal her identity or anything connection with certain bands.
There are 4 tapes playing during this trial, and prosecutors say they’re going to ask the jury to watch three of them. At least one of these tapes appears to relate directly to the alleged victim from 2008, and the others may relate to other alleged victims over the years.
Prosecutors accused Kelly of having sex with at least 4 minors, as well as rigging the 2008 trial…in which he was acquitted. Kelly’s attorney, however, fired back.
Jennifer Bonjeanwho now replaces Kelly, said her client had been sued for mob mentality – a lawsuit she says is far too late and clearly intended to paint him as a freak, even if he’s been through this wringer once before.
She called her accusers “criminals” who tried to extort Kelly, and who actually have immunity deals with those same prosecutors. Bonjean also said a tape that prosecutors alluded to but won’t play doesn’t exist – and relied on the fact that Jane Doe (who is the alleged victim in 2008) has long maintained that she wasn’t on tape with Kelly.
Bonjean called his client “flawed” but insisted he was innocent. R. Kelly was previously convicted of federal sex crimes in New York and was sentenced to 30 years behind bars.
