OCBC Users Can Use Face Verification To Check Bank Balance At ATMs
OCBC Bank today (March 18) announced the integration of facial biometrics for its ATM services as it moves towards eliminating the need to carry an ATM card, which can be skimmed or skimmed. stolen.
This makes it the first in Southeast Asia to allow face verification for ATM banking transactions. Previously, it was the first and only bank in Singapore to roll out QR code cash withdrawals in July 2019.
The first transaction that can be done using face verification on its ATMs is account balance requests.
This will first be rolled out at eight vending machines: OCBC Tampines Center One and Two, Taman Jurong Shopping Center, Great Eastern at Pickering Street, HDB Hub Level 1, 103 Yishun Ring Road, OCBC Campus and Geylang Road 7-Eleven.
According to the bank, account balance requests and cash withdrawals are the most widely used ATM services, accounting for nearly 8 in 10 of all ATM transactions made by its customers.
How it works
OCBC Bank is the first to leverage Singapore’s national digital identity infrastructure, Singpass Face Verification, to securely verify customers for ATM banking transactions without the need for bank cards.
To use facial verification at an OCBC bank ATM, customers can select the ATM service of their choice before entering their NRIC number on the ATM screen.
They will then be asked to position their face in a frame on the screen, while a web camera takes a scan of their face and checks the scanned image against the national biometric database in real time.
OCBC Bank’s ATM network is digitally linked to the National Biometric Database, which contains the images and identities of four million Singapore residents.
Once the facial scan has been verified, the customer can then proceed with their transaction at the ATM.
This convenient access to ATM banking services is a secure alternative to using physical ATM cards.
Face verification is integrated with security features to prevent fraud, including vividness detection technology that detects and blocks the use of photographs, videos or masks during the verification process.
Will be extended to other ATM transactions
After the deployment of facial verification for balance inquiries and cash withdrawals, it will be extended to other ATM transactions, including cash deposits, money transfers to other banks, top-ups by credit card and credit card bill payments starting next year.
While OCBC Bank has seen a significant increase in digital banking adoption by its customers, it says ATM usage remains high with more than two million cash withdrawals per month.
Sunny Quek, head of consumer financial services at OCBC Bank in Singapore, is confident that this service will gain traction with consumers in Singapore, as they are “passionate digital enthusiasts”.
“QR code cash withdrawals from ATMs increased 88% year over year in 2020. Many customers are already adopting QR code cash withdrawals without having to use a credit card. ATM, facial verification will add a layer of convenience to more customers when they access our banking touchpoints, ”he added.
