Novak Djokovic Booted from U.S. Open After Hitting Line Judge with Ball
Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic had a chance to make history at this year’s US Open … but wasted it after hitting a judge with a ball out of frustration.
Djokovic was excluded (disqualified) from the rest of the tournament on Sunday in the middle of his fourth-round match against Pablo Carreno Busta – who was leading 6-5 in the first set and had just scored a point – when ND angrily and randomly hit a ball that hit a linesman.
It doesn’t seem like he tried to hit her, but the fact that he hit her (in the neck, no less) and she was pulled out of the action was enough for him to be kicked. You immediately see him running to see her, but the damage was done.
Once told he couldn’t play anymore, he quickly grabbed his things and walked off the court … not before giving his opponent and the head judge a few handshakes.
Djokovic was the No.1 seed heading into the tournament – and he was in line to join an elite company if he had progressed further and racked up more wins. He had already taken an important step before Sunday’s game, with 600 victories on hard ground … 3rd behind the most Roger Federer (775) and Guillermo Vilas (670). Unfortunately, any further distinction will have to wait.
As for the linesman … she was escorted off the field, but looked more or less well. Before sending Djokovic on the way, she made sure to give him a knowing look of unease.
