Naomi Osaka Wears Breonna Taylor Mask to U.S. Open, More Tributes Planned
Tennis superstar Naomi Osaka Wore a Breonna Taylor tribute mask to her first game at the US Open on Monday … and says she has more tributes planned.
The 22-year-old has recently been very outspoken on social justice issues – and even “boycotted” a game at a different tournament last week following the Jacob blake filming.
So when she arrived at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City, she rocked the Breonna mask to help “publicize” the Taylor case.
“I am aware that tennis is watched all over the world, and maybe there is someone who doesn’t know the story of Breonna Taylor,” Osaka said.
“Maybe they’ll like Google or something. For me, it’s just about spreading the word. I feel like the more people know about the story, the more interesting or interested they’ll become in it. “
Taylor, 26, was shot and killed at her apartment in March when Louisville cops executed an arrest warrant. Her boyfriend says he fired a warning shot because he thought the officers were intruders, but they hit back, hitting Taylor 8 times.
After Osaka won their opener on Monday against Misaki Doi, she said she had 6 additional masks that she planned to wear throughout the tournament to honor other victims of police brutality.
“It’s pretty sad that seven masks isn’t enough for the number of names, so hopefully I get to the final and you can see them all.”
Osaka is expected to return to court on Wednesday to face Camila Giorgi.
