M’sian Tattoo Studio Cum Alcoholic Ice Cream Shop
Although I have never had a tattoo before, I can imagine the anxiety that pervades a tattoo parlor, as many of them generally look intimidating.
When we covered Poking Duck a few months ago, the tattoo artist shared that a lot of her clients said they were more comfortable getting a tattoo in her salon because it was like going to a friend’s house.
While having a comfortable environment might not be the most important part of getting a tattoo, I can imagine it would add a lot to the experience, especially if it’s your first time.
“We love to get tattoos on our own and from our experiences we have noticed that accessibility here differs from other places in the world. Therefore, we wanted to create a space friendly enough for anyone who has never inked before, ”two of Lickychan’s founders, Kit and Rick shared with Vulcan Post.
Not a common pairing
Lickychan is a tattoo parlor and alcoholic ice cream shop in Chow Kit.
The concept was born when one of the founders, Brian, who is also the chef at JOLOKO restaurant, thought of opening another tattoo studio separate from the one he already has in Cheras.
“I’ve always loved adding alcohol to my dessert and with Rick having a background as a bartender, we naturally turned to alcoholic licks and cakes,” Kit explained how it all came together.
Lickychan’s founding team is made up of 5 people: Kit and Rick who manage operations, Penny and Shin for architecture and design, and Brian for ice cream production and management of the tattoo studio.
“Only Brian has ice cream making experience and he’s also a tattoo artist by training, the rest of us are highly skilled at eating and drinking,” Kit joked.
Lickychan started operations on February 13, 2021, so they have only been a month since they started.
Encourage clients to get tattoos
Currently there are 2 full time tattoo artists, Reid and Jasper, who work in the tattoo studio called The Poke Guy.
The Poke Guy can be found in its own section of the premises and patrons can watch people getting tattoos through the windows. However, they will not be able to see it up close as it will annoy tattoo artists and their clients.
Their tattoos start at RM150 and are priced based on size and color. Kit and Rick also explained that this price is the average local market rate.
Although their artists use tattoo guns, in the future they hope to include guest artists in The Poke Guy who specialize in hand-poke or other specific signature styles.
“There were people who came to get a tattoo for the first time or came to get ice cream and got a tattoo spontaneously. Custom designs take time to create, so often clients come in to inquire and make an appointment for another day, ”they shared.
Nothing vanilla about this place
Although alcoholic ice cream is not a new concept in the country, it is quite rare that it is more difficult to perfect during the R&D phase because there is not much to benchmark.
The amount of alcohol they could use in the flavors had to be exact, otherwise the ice cream wouldn’t harden. Because of this, they were challenged to figure out how to get enough alcohol flavor in their ice cream.
“Neither of us had any experience with making ice cream on this scale and there was a lot of learning to get it right and what we were willing to compromise on,” they shared.
“We created a vegan piña colada, which took weeks to perfect. Each bad batch was 3 liters of waste and it’s not just a dish or a cocktail.
While the Lickychan team wanted to be experimental with their ice cream, they also made sure to be inclusive of lactose intolerant customers who wanted to enjoy alcoholic ice cream.
Therefore, they created a line of lactose free and vegan ice cream and made all of their cones gluten free and vegan for free. Their ice cream prices range from RM 9.80 to RM 16.80 per scoop, which tends to be a bit higher than average.
And in case you were wondering, they don’t serve vanilla ice cream, which is a very common question they get from their customers, in addition to the ones about delivery (which they don’t have). not yet).
The answer was unexpected
Lickychan is making the rounds on social media, which is to be expected with their appeal among Millennials and Gen Z groups.
“To be honest, we didn’t anticipate this response and how quickly it spread through word of mouth. It was a little overwhelming and we’re still learning a lot about the ice cream business, ”Kit and Rick shared with Vulcan Post.
“We have an incredible team, however, and we couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve accomplished in this short period. There are people who like what we do and others who really don’t.
As a space meant to make tattoos more inviting and less intimidating, Lickychan hopes their work will be able to remove some of the stigma society has on tattoos.
As for their upcoming projects, they would introduce more flavors to the list and look for collaborations.
