Author’s presentation text: I’ve always been interested in law but never had the courage to pursue my studies there, unlike Elle Woods in Legally Blonde. That being said, I still read legal documents online, albeit just for fun.
Today there is a group of Malaysian lawyers who make legal information fun and easy to understand on Instagram, much like what Docere does with medical information.
The page is called Advogeeks and is managed by 3 lawyers in Malaysia named Hong Shi, Thilagam and Alia. All three are managing and founding partners of a law firm dealing with various types of cases, from civil litigation to transfer of ownership cases.
Dictionary time: Transfer of ownership is the process of transferring title to property from one individual to another. This usually happens between a seller and a buyer, both of whom have signed a contract of sale for land or residential property.
Make the law accessible to all
Created by the common interest of knowledge sharing, the goal of Advogeeks is to promote legal literacy and awareness among Malaysians. Indeed, legal knowledge here is far from satisfactory, yet the subject affects everyone in society.
So, lawyers try to put legal information online in a fun way so that people can pay attention to it. On their Instagram, you’ll find small-scale information on topics ranging from the legality of polygamy in Malaysia to what happens if you don’t carry your IC.
The content is also published in multiple languages and is suitable for different communities, whether they are groups B40, M40 and T20, or groups of age, race, sex, religion, etc.
“We believe everyone should know what their rights are, especially when it comes to everyday issues ranging from something as common as shopping online to more serious issues like bankruptcy, civil marriages. and criminal offenses, ”Hong Shi told Vulcan Post.
Don’t get lost in the translation
What makes the law difficult for the average person to grasp is the complex jargon used, which requires an extra effort to research and understand it. Hong Shi said that this is actually also a challenge that the Advogeeks team face when creating their content.
“The ultimate challenge is to be the pioneer in one of the oldest professions in the world and you have standards to follow,” the team said. “[The] the content must be interesting and engaging to achieve our goal, but we must also be mindful of our presentation style in order to maintain the dignity of the profession.
In addition to working full time, lawyers must also devote more time to reading and discussing research laws to provide consistent articles for their page.
To avoid burnout, they have set up a rotation system where each of them must prepare their individual content for the week assigned to them. Once that’s prepared, the multiracial team will simply translate it from English into Malay, Chinese, and Tamil.
Great care is taken with each translation to ensure that the real meaning is not lost in the translation.
Hong Shi added that tackling controversial issues means a higher level of complexity when presenting their information, such as their article on sexual harassment. “These are sensitive issues and when we deal with sensitive issues we have to be careful to be respectful,” she explained.
For a society literate in law
While posting information on social media makes it harder to find specific keywords against a website, Advogeeks actually has a concrete agenda for their method.
Most of the time, those looking for legal information are in fact active learners interested in the law. Such groups would simply do a Google search and end up with an ocean of knowledge among the many websites to learn independently.
However, this is not the case for someone who is just trying to learn legal matters passively. Advogeeks are trying to fill this gap, as most would be scrolling social media for recreation already anyway.
“We want to take the initiative to approach them, present the legal information and knowledge right in front of them, simplify the material and gradually feed them legal knowledge, hoping that our followers will be more comfortable in day-to-day legal literacy, ”they explained.
As to whether they plan to monetize their content, they said that has never been discussed before. Aiming to increase their reach for now, they are simply aimed at instilling better legal literacy in Malaysians, and better yet, having their content help people when the situation arises.
That being said, the team is open to collaborations with like-minded partners who have the same goal of educating the public on legal issues through effective advocacy.
“Law is fun and we just want everyone to have fun. If a brand can help us achieve our goal, we will surely work with it, ”Hong Shi concluded.
At the end of the line : While their content is not designed in the most aesthetically pleasing way, each post contains valuable information that has been simplified for anyone to learn. Ultimately, it is this information that matters most to increasing Malaysian literacy about our rights.
