Maya Angelouthe son applauds Whoopi Goldberg for fighting to get his famous mother on paper money…and he wants Ida B Wells to get the next honor.
Here’s the deal…the US Mint is now circulating a quarter of Angelou, but Whoopi used its “View” platform, pushing to honor black women with paper money instead of just coins.
son of Maya, Guy Johnson, tells TMZ … he is grateful that his mother is featured in the neighborhood, and while he understands others are beating the drum to have him on the $20 bill, he reminds people that change is almost always progressive.
Guy admits he would have loved to see his mother on the $10 bill, or the $20 or the $100…but he says America is only a few years after Trump…and Maya would still see her neighborhood as a wonderful honor.
Maya’s son says the famous poet would have this message…keep moving forward, because there’s a way to go before justice is meted out equally in America.
Whoopi mentioned the ongoing battle to get Harriet Tubman on the 20th, and Guy says that Ida B. Wells should also get her due with an acknowledgment on paper money.
Guy says he approved of the final image – showing Maya spreading her arms with a bird, a nod to her famous ‘I know why the caged bird is singing’.
Maya’s son says the final product received his blessing because it seemed to symbolize his mother reaching out… telling us it was in line with her spirit.
