After 12 years running a modeling agency, Same Tham thought there had to be a faster way to do things.

“Whenever we had to borrow talent from another agency, I thought to myself that I really wish I could have had a system where I could easily find all the talent in Malaysia when I needed it,” he said. he declares.

The idea quickly materialized over coffee with a close friend who happened to be a programmer.

From there, Modello was born.

Simply put, it’s like grabbing for models and brands

With the Modello app, brands have full control over the recruitment process.

When a brand needs a model, they can define the job requirements and post it on Modello.

As soon as the job is posted, talents who meet the requirements will receive instant notification to apply for the job.

On the brand side, they will receive a notification as soon as someone applies for the position and can start reviewing applicants immediately without waiting for a compiled list.

“Also, another benefit that a brand derives from using Modello is that there are no hidden costs,” Same added.

“The brand has complete control over how much it is willing to spend on a campaign.”

Find the right model

Since Modello encourages all talent (even aspiring ones) to join the platform, the jobs posted usually require minimal experience or skills.

So if a model feels over or underqualified for a job, they just can’t apply.

“We try not to interfere too much in the job matching process. We want it to be as close as possible to a “free market”, ”he said.

It means letting the market decide the value of a trade.

Modello is involved in the revision of the rating systems of former employers.

A talent with a higher rating will naturally have an advantage over a talent with a lower rating.

Think of it like choosing which seller on Shopee or Lazada you prefer to buy for the same product.

Most would naturally be drawn to the one with a higher rating.

Modello also asks talents to provide as much detail as possible during the registration process, including their experience and skill levels.

All of this information will be passed on to brands when someone applies for their position.

“Finally, we also have an in-house talent manager, Pavell, who will intermittently schedule phone calls and meet with talent,” Same said.

A talent with a good work history and good Pavell scores will receive a “Modello Verified” badge displayed next to their profile.

Transactions use a credit system

In order for brands to advertise their jobs on the platform, they will need to purchase credits.

For example, to post a job where a model is paid 100 RM, the advertiser must obtain 100 credits from Modello to do so.

Modello charges a flat rate markup of 15% on all credit exchanges.

So, to get 100 credits, an advertiser will have to pay 115 RM to Modello.

As for models, credits are transferred to them after completing a job.

They can then convert it to cash where each credit is worth RM1.

“Every 14th and 28th of the month, we automatically return the credits converted into cash to our talents,” Same explained.

Currently, Modello has more than 6,000 registered talents and around twenty agencies on board its platform.

Likewise, a talent with a good track record and critical ratings can expect to get maybe 3 to 4 gigs per week.

On average, a gig would earn them RM300 to RM500, which can translate to RM4,000 to RM8,000 in monthly income if they get consistent concerts.

He explained that the platform’s biggest challenge when first launching the app was getting advertisers to manage their campaigns on their own.

At the time, many brands preferred to pay higher prices to agencies because they didn’t know how easy it was to find talent on a platform.

“We had to let them try it out and in fact to this day we continue to offer free credits and personal product demos to our agency clients so they can try using our service. “, did he declare.

Modello is currently in its pre-income phase and is actively trying different ways to achieve market fit.

The coronavirus has arguably slowed them down, but they expect to break even very soon.

At this point, our priority is still to perfect the app and serve our first batch of customers well. Once we have achieved these goals, we will then move on to extending the service to more partner brands.
