Lakers Fans Arrested in Post-Victory Madness at Staples Center
8:22 am PT – The LAPD has updated the number and it’s worse than initially thought.
Now cops say 76 people were arrested in total and 8 policemen were injured in the Sunday night chaos.
The LAPD claims that 2 people were injured by “less lethal ammunition fired by our officers”.
In addition, more than 30 buildings were damaged.
The LAPD released a statement saying, “What started as a largely peaceful celebration of the Los Angeles Lakers’ NBA Championship in downtown Los Angeles turned into confrontational, violent and destructive behavior late last night.”
“A crowd of over 1,000 revelers descended on the area around the Staples Center after the game. Unruly individuals mixed in in the crowd began to throw glass bottles, stones and other projectiles at the officers.”
“This is when an illegal gathering was declared, and only a limited number of people complied and began to disperse. More of the group broke up and started vandalizing companies while continuing to engage in violent behavior, some aimed at responding to agents “
“A total of 76 people were arrested for vandalism, assault on a police officer and lack of dispersion.”
Cops arrested 67 people outside Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday night – in a crazy party that had everything from fireworks to a guy in a real plastic bubble!
Hundreds of fans gathered outside the arena – despite the fact, the team was still in Orlando, Florida – and things quickly got crazy!
So many people have turned up (remember, we are still in a pandemic) – that law enforcement has declared a gathering illegal in an attempt to get people back to their homes!
The California Highway Patrol has also closed freeway exit ramps in the area to keep crowds out of the crowd.
In the end, we’re told the cops arrested 61 people for not dispersing, 5 for looting, and 1 for vandalism – a total of 67.
We are told that a policeman was injured in the chaos – injured in the hand from a bottle someone threw at the cops.
Some fans were also injured. There are pictures of paramedics treating someone outside of Staples but it’s unclear exactly what happened.
Not all the fans were combative – there were groups of people singing Kobe bryantthe name of, others waving Lakers flags.
But, there were times when fans assaulted each other with the police – some even tried to kick the windshield of a police car – which led to officers brandishing guns. in order to try to keep the peace.
We’ve seen footage of the celebration of fans fighting in the streets, looting Starbucks, and setting off fireworks.
As for the game, the Lakers beat the Miami Heat in Game 6 of the NBA Finals, winning the 17th title in franchise history.
