No, Kim kardashian and Kylie jenner did NOT apply for unemployment benefits … but some moron from Michigan managed to defraud the state of thousands of dollars using famous names.
So look at this… someone filed a few jobless claims in May 2020 under “Kimberly Kardashian” and “Kylie Jenner” with an address in Traverse City… four hours northwest of Detroit.
The point is … no one checked whether the claims were legitimate before paying “Kimberly” and “Kylie” some 8 weeks of backdated unemployment benefits … to the tune of over $ 7,000 each.
Payments, BTW, reached bank accounts just days before the state’s fraud management software flagged the claims as the agency needed additional identity verification. But by then it was too little, too late.
Apparently the employment office is riddled with fraud. As the Detroit News first reported … the agency approved thousands of claims at the height of the pandemic, knowing nearly 10% would be fraudulent claims.
So why approve all the claims? Because if the agency had had to sort everything and identify fraudulent claims, it would have withheld thousands of legitimate claims.
And that’s how those “Kardashians” and “Jenner” got paid … not to mention another goofball’s fraudulent claim … which included copies of a fake ID with a photo of the star of “The Office” John krasinski.
For what it’s worth, the United States attorney’s office has already cracked down … charging at least 13 people with plotting the state’s unemployment system. The state attorney general said he was investigating dozens of other cases and the unemployment agency had laid off 10 employees.
