HSA authorises use of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines for children aged 12 to 15

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has cleared the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine for use in children between the ages of 12 and 15, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said today (May 18).

The Department of Health (MOH) said it would work with the Department of Education (MOE) on a vaccination program for this age group, and provide further updates in due course.

This is the first Covid-19 vaccine authorized for this age group in Singapore. Previously, only those 16 and over were considered suitable for the vaccine.

Our expert committee on COVID-19 vaccination also weighed in on their approval. The two teams assessed that the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine demonstrated high efficacy and safety for this 12 to 15 year old age group, which is consistent with what we have observed for the adult population.

Starting Wednesday (May 19), all schools will switch to home learning until the end of the term on May 28. The announcement came after several elementary school students tested positive for Covid-19.

From Wednesday, people aged 40 to 44 will also be invited to register for their vaccinations.

Individuals can register online via vaccine.gov.sg, and they will receive an acknowledgment text message after registration. After which, a separate SMS with a personalized booking link to make an appointment will be sent to eligible people.

The Department of Health said individuals can expect to receive the message within one to two weeks after registration.
