How To Check For Unclaimed Money Online: Step-By-Step Guide
Have you ever found money in your pockets, couch cushions, or a drawer that you haven’t opened in years? It’s a nice feeling, isn’t it?
But forget about the pocket change. What if you had RM100 or RM1000 that you forgot? Maybe it’s an insurance claim that was approved but for some reason was not paid to you, or money in a savings account that you left inactive for years.
In 2019, these unclaimed funds in Malaysia amounted to nearly RM11 billion. Here’s how to check if you have them.
But first, what is unclaimed money?
Unclaimed money can refer to unpaid money that is legally payable to you, or money that has been inactive for many years. According to the Department of the General Accountant of Malaysia, there are three categories of unclaimed funds:
- Money unpaid for at least a year (for example, salaries, bonuses, dividends, insurance claims, etc.).
- Money not used for at least seven years (for example, savings account, checking account, fixed deposit).
- Money credited to a business account that has been inactive for at least two years (for example, business creditors account, business debtors account with a credit balance).
How to check unclaimed money online
A few years ago, you had to physically go to the counter of the Registrar of Unclaimed Funds to check if there is no unclaimed money and request a refund.
But with the eGUMIS (Electronic Government Unclaimed Money Information System) portal, you can now do it online. When the portal was first launched, you could only verify unclaimed money, but still had to make a physical or email request to the general accounting department. Today you can start the entire refund process through the portal. Here’s how.
1. Register on eGUMIS
Go to the eGUMIS portal to create a new account.
2. Update your eGUMIS profile
When you log in for the first time, you will be asked to update your profile with these details.
3. Search with an IC number
Once your profile is updated, you will be redirected to the eGUMIS dashboard. To begin your search, click on “Click here to check unclaimed amounts”.
Enter the ID number you want to verify. Note that you can only verify a maximum of two numbers per day – you’ll have to wait until the next day if you want to verify more numbers.
If the ID number you entered contains unclaimed money, the search results are displayed below. Click “Go to Application” to continue.
4. Add beneficiary details
Here is where you will see the request form.
Click on “Add a beneficiary” to fill in the contact details of the person who should receive the refunded money.
Record the beneficiary information, then click “Next”.
5. Download the relevant documents
Then you will be asked to upload the necessary documents to complete the application. You will need these documents:
- A copy of your identity card, passport or any other form of identification
- A copy of your active bank account statement
If you are applying for these funds on behalf of a parent or spouse, you may need additional documents, such as your birth or marriage certificate.
Once you have finished uploading the documents, you can click “Next”. When you complete the application, you will see a notice stating that your “file has been successfully submitted”.
Finally, wait for your refund
While your application is still pending, you can log into the portal at any time to check its status. If your documents have been successfully verified, you will receive an email notification from eGUMIS indicating that your request has been accepted. Your payment will be credited to your bank account within 30 business days from the date of notification.
If your documents could not be verified, you will receive a notification from eGUMIS, asking you to reconnect to the portal and upload the correct documents again.
Overall, requesting a refund through eGUMIS is a painless process. If you already have your paperwork ready, it might take a few minutes – it’s worth it to get the money you might have forgotten.
