Android phone users have utilized Qualcomm chipsets in their devices for years. There have been some competitors over the years, but they have either been inferior or unavailable in most parts of the world. One of the strongest criticisms that people have is that while they like Qualcomm’s work, they wish there was some semblance of competition.
Now Google may be giving Qualcomm a run for its money. Google is planning on building a new smartphone chipset that could appear in devices next year.
It is true that Google already has a chipset called the Pixel Visual Core. But the new chipset Google wants to produce is a unique model that could replace the Snapdragon standard Qualcomm makes, or at least contend with it. Google’s new chipset would also allow the company to have more control over what it produces, similar to what Apple experiences right now.
The Whitechapel Design
Google’s planned chipset works under the Whitechapel name. It features a 5nm process and uses an eight-core ARM processor. Other features may be incorporated in the Whitechapel system in the future, especially as phones become more advanced.
Google designed the Whitechapel chipset with Samsung, a company that makes various devices that use the Snapdragon layout. The focus between Google and Samsung is to produce a chipset that can support machine-learning functions. Much of this includes working with the Google Assistant program that has been utilized in many smart devices from the company as of late.
Google is hoping to get the new Whitechapel chipset ready for devices beginning in 2021. The Pixel 5 that will come out later this year will likely have the same Snapdragon chipset that many other Google devices already have.
One of the top reasons why Google would want to produce a unique chipset entails more than getting off of its dependency on Qualcomm. It also includes Google having more control over the devices it produces.
The move would be similar to what Apple has been doing over the years. Apple has full control over the manufacturing and design processes for its devices.
Google’s effort would incorporate more Android integration into its products. Part of this includes focusing on making Google Assistant more prevalent. It may also be easier for Google to update its devices more often and for longer periods, thus allowing various Google phones to be useful for years to come. Google’s direct understanding of how its devices work may assist Google in producing more efficient items that work well.
Will 5G Work?
One mystery surrounding Google’s move involves whether the Whitechapel chipset can handle faster 5G signals. Google is hoping to get on the 5G train with its devices, although that would depend on the technology used and how well it can get carriers to pick up its phones. But 5G has become more prevalent around the world, so there is a chance that Google may find a way to get access to these signals with the new chipset.
