First Punisher Cover Hits Auction Block, Valued at $2 Million
What a 1974 Spider-Man comic book cover starring The Punisher has in common with the Mona Lisa? They are both masterpieces that have been lost and recovered … but only one of them has actually been auctioned.
The folks at CommicConnect found the original cover art for Spider-Man issue 129. The issue is special because it’s The Punisher’s very first appearance on the cover. The Punisher is the alter-ego of Frank Marin’s old castle. The character sought revenge after the Mafia killed his wife and children in a shootout in Central Park.
For decades now, rumor has it that the cover art only exists. But, no one knew the co-artist Gil kane quietly and privately sold the piece to a private collector.
CommicConnect now has it in hand and values the work of art at $ 2 million !!! How did they find this figure? When the original Hulk cover with Wolverine’s first appearance in issue # 181 was supposed to exist, speculators valued that cover at $ 2 million. CommicConnect will soon know what it’s really worth.
The cover will be hit the auction block from November 23 to December 14. For context … a few years ago, a CCG-certified copy of Action Comics issue 1 sold for a record $ 3,207,852. There was also an original cover art for Amazing Spider-Man number 328 … which sold for $ 690,000.
Our sincere thanks to
