Former MLB player Pedro Feliciano – who pitched for the New York Mets for 9 seasons – died Sunday night, baseball analyst Edouard Perez reported.
He was only 45 years old.
Perez did not disclose Feliciano’s cause of death … but broadcaster ESPN said the former reliever died in his sleep.
“It was a very good [baseball player] but a better person off the pitch, ”Perez said. “He will be missed. “
Perez added that Feliciano had been jet skiing with his family earlier on Sunday.
Feliciano was drafted by the Dodgers in 1995 and finally made his MLB debut for the Mets at age 25 in 2002.
He continued to pitch for the Mets until 2010 – then signed a two-year contract with the Yankees, although he didn’t play for the Pinstripes in either 2011 or 2012 as he struggled with injuries. .
He eventually re-signed with the Mets in 2013, but didn’t spend any more time in the big leagues after that season.
Feliciano revealed in 2013 that he was diagnosed with a rare disease – a condition in which he said doctors found he had a “small hole” in his heart. It is not known if this played a role in his death on Sunday.
