Rachel Nichols apologized to a colleague at ESPN, Maria taylor, on national television – this after a bomb NYT Report – and former NBA stars Kendrick perkins and Richard jefferson were there to add their two cents.
The veteran NBA anchor took a moment Monday on “The Jump” to touch on this weekend’s story from The Times – which has brought to light the sports network’s drama over the past year… the following controversial remarks recorded Rachel had Maria, who is black, circled.
Right off the bat, RN admitted she didn’t like it becoming the story … but admitted it nonetheless, saying she was deeply sorry for everyone she let down with her comments, especially Maria. Rachel added that she was grateful to be part of the ESPN team.
Perk and Rich took it from there … with the former ringing the bell first, thanking Rachel for taking responsibility for her actions and letting the audience know he knew her heart – all the while pointing out that he s he always felt comfortable with her presence. He also shouted at Maria, who he felt deserved every opportunity that came her way… and that he hoped they could all support each other in the future. RJ echoed these sentiments as well.
He ended on a somewhat sobering note, however, saying that he, Rachel and others at ESPN have had difficult conversations lately about this… and that they will continue to have difficult conversations. Rachel thanked them for their views and they continued with coverage of the NBA Finals.
The response follows the audio resurfacing, which shows Rachel having a frank conversation with James lebron” Public relations advisor, Adam mendelsohn, last year during the playoffs… in which Rachel expressed her frustration that ESPN was seeking Maria to share hosting duties with her during the finals – something Rachel compared to a move of “diversity “.
The NYT reported that ESPN was controlling significant damage internally following the leaked clips among internal employees.
