One of Dave chappelleS best friends say most people don’t understand “The Closer” or the controversy surrounding it – and they don’t understand what the people who defend it really mean, either.
Find out what Donnell Rawlings had to tell LAX on Tuesday – we asked about the fact Jay Z – and others, including the former Prez Barack obama – recently appeared to be supporting Dave’s special and / or vouching for his character.
DR thinks people misinterpret all of this “support” because, as he put it, most celebrities speaking for Dave don’t necessarily co-sign his point – but rather champion free speech. and the rights of artists.
At least, that’s what Donnell took from Jay when he said “The Closer” sometimes made him cringe, but that’s what “great art” makes you do sometimes.
It’s a pretty interesting point he’s making – and he adds that despite all the controversy, Dave is in a good mood right now. Donnell goes so far as to call it the “happiest point” in Chappelle’s life.
It seemed pretty clear, from DC’s face when we released it in Hollywood last month … just like the The “closer” buzz began to take off.
As you know, Chappelle said he’s struggling to find a distribution for his new, untitled documentary film – due to the backlash from “The Closer” – but Donnell gives it a take and explains why it’s more important than never for people to see it. .. especially enemies.
