Could Propecia Up Young Men’s Suicide Risk?
“Sexual dysfunction in younger men can lead to depression and, in a subset of these men, suicidal ideation,” Irwig said.
Trinh said these results should not be over-interpreted to say that finasteride causes suicides, only that there appears to be an association.
He does believe, however, that many more young men taking finasteride are considering suicide than has been reported to VigiBase.
Abdulmaged Traish, Emeritus Professor of Urology at Boston University School of Medicine, believes that finasteride has a biological effect that disrupts the central nervous system in some young patients, which can have psychological effects like depression. and suicide.
The drug can help some people, he says. “But it comes at a high price, especially for a non-threatening disorder like alopecia [hair loss]”, he noted.” It is not a disease that kills people. “
If a man wants to try finasteride for hair loss, he should at least be educated about the risks, Traish said.
“Doctors should have a frank and open discussion with the patient about the potential unwanted side effects of the drug,” he said. “If the patient still wants to take it, that’s OK, but at least tell them, honestly, that’s what we know.”
Traish also thinks the United States Food and Drug Administration should have a “boxed warning” that the drug can cause suicidal ideation in some young men. No such warning is currently included in the package leaflet.
