Coronavirus May Pass From Mom to Baby

July 10, 2020 – It is possible that the new coronavirus will be transmitted from infected pregnant women to their babies, according to Italian researchers.

They evaluated 31 women with COVID-19 who gave birth in March and April, and found signs of the virus in several umbilical cord and placenta blood samples and a breast milk sample, the Associated Press reported.

The research was presented at an online medical conference.

Still, pregnant women shouldn’t be alarmed, said Dr. Claudio Fenizia, study director, specialist in immunology at the University of Milan.

The results do not mean that there is a viable coronavirus in the samples and “it is too early to establish guidelines” or to make changes in the care of pregnant women, according to Fenizia, reported the AP.

But more research is needed, especially in women who are infected earlier in their pregnancy, Fenizia said.
