Congress Passes Pandemic Economic Relief Package
TUESDAY, December 22, 2020 (Healthday News) – As Congress passed a $ 900 billion pandemic relief package on Monday, US experts warned that a new, more infectious variant of the coronavirus recently discovered in Britain could already circulating in this country.
The relief bill will allow direct payments of $ 600 to any American who made less than $ 75,000 in the last tax year, the Washington post reported, checks arriving as early as next week. Improved unemployment benefits will also be extended and businesses will receive $ 325 billion in economic relief under the bill.
Seeking to reassure a struggling country, President-elect Joe Biden received the first dose of the two-dose Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine on Monday. He did it live on TV at ChristianaCare Hospital in Newark, Del.
Biden said, “I’m doing this to demonstrate that people need to be prepared when they are available to take the vaccine,” the New York Times reported.
Meanwhile, health experts fear that a disturbing variant of the coronavirus that has arisen in Britain may already be in the United States, the Publish reported.
“We don’t know for sure, but it’s safe to assume it’s happening,” Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said Monday. “It could very well be here for all we know.”
Some infectious disease experts said on Monday that the variant may not even have originated in Britain, the Publish reported. Instead, it may have been identified first because the UK government has a strong surveillance system that has tracked tens of thousands of genomic sequences from virus samples. The United States does not have about the same level of virus surveillance, the newspaper said.
“It may very well be here. It may have even started here. Sequencing in the United States is so sporadic,” said Jeremy Luban, a virologist at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine. Publish.
“It makes sense that it was first detected in the UK, because they probably have the best surveillance program in the world. It wouldn’t shock me at all to know that it is also circulating in the US,” said said Angela Rasmussen, virologist at the Georgetown Center for Global Health Science and Security, in Washington, DC
