Companies Can Now Offset CO2 Emissions Through Lenovo’s IT Products

Millennials currently make up 50% of the workforce in Malaysia and by 2025 75% of global workers will be millennials.
In a 2020 survey, Deloitte found that 61% of millennials appreciate employers who try to reduce the company’s impact on the environment. Armed with this knowledge, companies should then seriously consider implementing company-wide green initiatives to attract and retain Gen Y talent.
Lenovo, one of the world’s largest PC makers, recently launched the Lenovo CO2 Offset Services, providing businesses with a solution to offset the carbon emissions of certain Lenovo products at the time of purchase.
What is carbon offsetting and how does it work?
Carbon offsetting is a method allowing individuals and companies to offset their CO2 emissions by financing an equivalent CO2 saving action project.
After purchasing certain Lenovo CO2 Offset Services products and subscribing to the service, customers may choose to register for a CO2 saving project one of Lenovo’s partner initiatives. These are specially hand-picked projects, some even supervised by the United Nations.
One of the Green Projects Specifically for Asia-Pacific Customers (APAC) focuses on biomass energy, which produces electricity using wind power harnessed by sugar factories. Another APAC project tackles the safe and clean disposal of waste, which generates renewable energy while reducing greenhouse gases.
LVM Versicherung, a German insurance company, has opted for Lenovo’s CO2 offset services with its order for 4,000 ThinkPad X1 Yoga laptops and 4,500 ThinkVision P27h-20 monitors.
Instead of settling for the automatic CO2 emissions compensation service provided by Lenovo, the German company has gone even further. The purchases they made were filled by train from Lenovo’s manufacturing plants in China to Germany, further reducing their carbon footprint compared to delivering products by air.

Lenovo’s ongoing green initiatives
Lenovo’s CO2 offset services are not the company’s first green initiative. In 2020, the company was recognized for its actions to reduce emissions, mitigate climate risks and develop a low-carbon economy (energy needs from clean sources).
Lenovo succeeded in reducing its “scope 1 and 2” greenhouse gas emissions (direct and indirect) by 92% in 2020, exceeding the company’s initial target of 40% set in 2010. The brand includes that climate change poses a risk to the planet, and they are actively combating it by changing the way they operate.
It even starts when consumers check out certain Lenovo products on their online environmental declaration page. This is where consumers can see the amount of carbon emissions the products produce. These detailed reports include a breakdown of manufacturing, shipping, and estimated usage over five years.
Report a sighting: In the report Regarding the carbon emissions of the ThinkPad X1 Nano Gen 1, Lenovo details that transport by rail is lower than by plane or truck. This is why LVM Versicherung has chosen to deliver its purchases by train.
With these reports in hand, environmentally conscious companies can be well informed about the carbon footprint of the products they use on a daily basis. However, knowledge alone is not enough, proactive actions are needed for real change to happen, and this is where Lenovo CO2 Offset Services plays its part.
Prior to launching CO2 offsetting services in the APAC region, Lenovo tested the service in several Nordic countries. Through this trial, they were able to offset more than 26,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide, which equates to emissions from 1.7 million miles from air flights or annual emissions from 8,600 households.
Initiatives like these place decision-making and power in the hands of companies, who can now lead by example when it comes to making green choices, not just to attract their employees and customers, but also in the interest of a more sustainable future for everything.
