July 17, 2020 – In a rapid policy reversal, the Trump administration told the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday to re-publish hospitalization data for COVID-19 on its website.
Earlier in the week, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) ordered the CDC to stop publishing the data because it was doing it too slowly. Instead, HHS would manage the data, CNN reported.
Health experts have criticized the HHS decision.
“Given the political nature of the response to date, it is a step backwards for this data to be transmitted directly to the HHS in Washington,” said former CDC acting director Dr Richard Besser. CNN.
The CDC deleted some data from its website on Wednesday evening, but HHS told the CDC Thursday morning to re-publish the data.
