A black cat on the 9th floor of the collapsed Miami apartment apparently has 9 lives – because he was found alive and well … and now, reunited with grateful members of his family.
Binx the cat is owned by the Gonazalez family, who are said to have lived in unit 904 of the Champlain Towers South condemned condo complex. The kitten was returned to the family on Friday, with a press conference to deliver the tiny good news amid the gruesome tragedy.
As Mayor of Miami-Dade County Daniella Levine Cava “I am happy that this little miracle can shed some light on the life of a wounded family today and provide a bright spot for our entire community.”
Officials say a volunteer found Binx near the destroyed building. Volunteers and animal control officers searched for pets that may have escaped during and after the building collapsed.
It is not known if the Gonzalez were at home when the building fell shockingly early in the morning of June 24 – but the good news is that they are safe, just like their beloved Binx.
The mayor said it had been “16 long and extremely difficult days” for the community – the death toll now stands at 86 – so they can use whatever good news they can get.
