The fence around the United States Capitol is crumbling in the sense of a desire to put the Jan.6 attack in the rearview mirror of the nation, but the Capitol Police are pissed off … mostly because they are replaced by bicycle racks.
Sources within the law enforcement agency told TMZ … the base is in turmoil over officials who have decided to remove the perimeter fence – as of Friday – which was erected as a result of insurgency due to persistent security concerns.
Capitol Police officers were informed by email on Wednesday that bike racks will replace the fence to restrict access to the building’s west terrace – the area where Asset– the supporting rioters clashed with the police – but we are told that this is the part that enraged them the most.
If you remember … bike racks were used by the insurgents as weapons against police, and our sources say Capitol Hill cops believe the much taller fences offer more security and protection against potential future riots.
Also, the bike racks didn’t do much to stop an attack last time around… so we’re told many Capitol Hill cops are in disbelief at the repetition of this plan.
Additionally, our sources say there are concerns that the Capitol Police have enough staff to secure the building without the fence … as more than 75 members have left the force since Jan. 6, and we’re told more of them are planning to quit.
We are told the remaining officers want the fence to be maintained until proper training is completed to prepare for potential future attacks, but until then many are concerned … especially with the return of tourism to Washington. .
To note — additional barricades around the White House that have been installed over the past year, starting with the riots following George floyd, were deleted earlier this week … allowing people to walk to the north lawn fence.
Capitol Police officials also say the fence around the Capitol can be reinstalled within 24 hours, if necessary.
