Campaign To Help MBO Through Merch Sales

Today, MBO Cinemas published an unprecedented publication on its Facebook page: a video message.

He held a heartfelt message from his new CEO, Cheah Chun Wai.

He has been with MBO since 2013, initially as Director of Sales Marketing. In January 2018, he rose through the ranks to the position of COO. In October, he was promoted to CEO.

With this amount of history between him and the company, the content in the video felt more raw and authentic than ever.

Another potential 6 to 12 months of struggles

In the video, he expressed how much they miss their fans and look forward to seeing everyone again soon.

He also introduced himself as the new CEO of MBO, but said he did not want to be congratulated yet.

On the contrary, he would like everyone to wish him and his team the best of luck in these times.

Everyone now knows how badly the movie industry has been affected by the pandemic, and our local channels have tried various tactics to try to get out of it.

Chun Wai said the struggles started around Chinese New Year 2020, and by September 2020, MBO’s admission rate had dropped to around 10-15 percent.

“Which means if we had 50 clients before, we only have 2-3 clients per session,” he explained of their dire situation.

They have since done their best to cut costs while waiting for the content to return to the big screen, but with the current situation, Chun Wai said he may have to wait another 6 to 12 months.

That’s a long time to take for a company that is already struggling so hard.

Fans needed for #StayStrongMBOCinemas

As you may have heard just a week or two ago, there was news that MBO was shutting down for good.

The Edge Markets have announced the news of a notice on the intention to complete the liquidation process of MBO Cinemas, officially known as MCAT Box Office Sdn Bhd.

However, MBO is still determined to save himself and stay longer.

Chun Wai shared in the video that they will stay strong, and for that, they needed the help of their fans for their #StayStrongMBOCinemas campaign.

They have thousands of limited edition products in their stock, which is currently slowing down due to lack of entries.

To help sell them, MBO will open table sales in its cinema hall respecting the SOPs of October 30, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at all MBO locations except:

  • Klang,
  • U8 space,
  • Seremban,
  • Skudai,
  • Brem Shopping Center,
  • and Kota Tinggi.

1 coin can be purchased at RM15, while 4 coins can be purchased at RM50.

Chun Wai pleaded for fans to come and support them if they ever wanted to return to MBO, and added: “Kasi sapu licin!

Besides physical sales, MBO is also working on listing their merchandise on their official Shopee account here, and will update fans once everything is ready.
