CA Cop Charged with Manslaughter for Shooting Black Man in Walmart
A Bay Area police officer has been charged with manslaughter for shooting and killing a black man who wielded a bat at Walmart.
The cop from San Leandro, Jason fletcher, did not attempt to defuse the situation before fatally shooting a 33-year-old Steven Demarco Taylor … according to the Alameda County District Attorney, Nancy E. O’Malley.
Prosecutor says Taylor did not pose an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm to Fletcher or others in the store, and says she made the decision Wednesday to charge the officer with manslaughter .
As we reported … the cops responded to the Walmart outside of Oakland on the afternoon of April 18, and met Taylor with an aluminum bat in his hands.
Police said they used Tasers on him first near the shopping cart area, but video showed he was shot multiple times by a Taser or a gun … even after dropping the bald -mouse and fell to the ground.
Prosecutors say Fletcher first used a stun gun on Taylor and then shot him in the chest. The entire encounter lasted about 40 seconds.
After his death, Taylor’s family publicly requested that the officer be charged. Fletcher will be arraigned later this month.
