Several members of Britney GrinerThe Russian basketball team came to his aid during his trial in Moscow on Thursday … praising his character and leadership in testimony inside the courtroom.
A week after plead guilty to drug charges in the foreign country, Griner’s trial continued – and during the proceedings, players and officials from UMMC Yekaterinburg, Griner’s former basketball team in Russia, testified in favor of the WNBA star.
Team captain Evgeniya Belyakovaaccording NPR, told the court that Griner was “the heart of our team.” She added that fans in Russia “love” the 31-year-old center.
One of Griner’s lawyers added after the hearing that the director of UMMC Yekaterinburg, Maxim Ryabkovalso “gave a positive description of Brittney Griner during her court address, noting her exceptional abilities as a player and her personal contribution to building team spirit, which has enabled the team to achieving the best results in the Russian Premier Basketball League and in international competitions for many years.”
Griner showed up to the courtroom wearing a dark-colored t-shirt and glasses. She did not testify during the proceedings. His trial is scheduled to continue Friday morning.

Griner’s attorneys said they hoped his guilty plea would result in “no harsh sentence” for the basketball player. His trial is expected to end in August.
