November 12, 2021 – Britney Spears is finally free.
A Los Angeles judge on Friday ordered the end of the guardianship that for years limited the pop singer’s freedom over her own finances.
“Guardianship of the person and estate of Britney Jean Spears is no longer required,” said Brenda Penny, a judge of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to The New York Times.
There was “no need for a declaration of capacity” from Spears, Penny said, noting that it was voluntary guardianship.
John Zabel, the chartered accountant who took over the estate in September, will continue to help with estate planning and move outside assets into an existing trust for Spears, she said.
The news comes less than a month after Jamie Spears, Britney Spears’ father, was formally suspended as the curator of his esteemed $ 60 million estate.
In October, Penny called the situation “untenable” and appointed Zabel, a chartered accountant, as a temporary replacement to oversee her finances. Penny said the suspension was in the singer’s best interests and noted that the decision could not be appealed.
“Britney deserves to wake up tomorrow without her father as a curator,” Mathew Rosengart, her lawyer, said at the hearing.
Rosengart described his father as a “cruel, toxic and abusive man” and said the singer wanted him removed from the estate.
“This is what my client wants, this is what my client needs, this is what my client deserves,” he said.
Rosengart mentioned the details of Controlling Britney Spears, a documentary by The New York Times which reveals new information about his life under guardianship.
“We learned that Mr. Spears did something unfathomable,” Rosengart said. “He asked a security team, paid by my client, to place a listening device in Britney’s room.”
But in response, Vivian Thoreen, Jamie Spears’ lawyer, said the details of the documentary were “not evidence, this is rhetoric,” CNN reported.
Today’s hearing has been set for October to consider Spears’ request to end guardianship. Another hearing is scheduled for December 13 to address further details of the case. Lawyers for Jamie Spears have until Dec. 30 to provide financial records for the past 13 years, according to CBS News.
Jamie Spears has been the singer’s estate curator since 2008. He was also her personal curator, overseeing her health and medical issues, until he stepped down from the role in 2019. At that time, Jodi Montgomery, a professional trustee, has been appointed as her personal curator and remains in that position.
